The Great Information Revolution, which started at the end of the last century, openeded a new era in the history of mankind. The beginnings and rapid development of the World Wide Web of Internet promotes the eliminations of the century-long borders on the axes of the traditional opposition between the East and the West, between the North and the South.

In Europe the end of the 20th century was marked by the completion of the disintegration of the Habsburgs Empire and the beginning of the disintegration of the Russian-Soviet Empire, and by the formation independent states in the centre, on the east and the south of this part of the world, one of which became Ukraine.

The above-mentioned factors became the main conditions of the appearance of this web site, which shows its visitors round one of the most interesting city of the West European civilization. The principal subjects of the virtual magazine "Chernihiv. The princely city of Ukraine" are: history, culture, the humanities. Its aim is to promote mutual understanding between the nations, their mutual spiritual enrichment. I hope that the web site will be also interesting for the Ukrainian diaspora abroad as well as for the Chernihivites themselves.

This site appeared as a result of a private initiative. The images of the Semargles (one of the seven divine beings of the Old Russian pantheon) and the Cheetabs, which were drawn by my daughter Elena, became the tenor of its design. Such creatures are met on the carved stones of the medieval buildings of Chernihiv. The general design of the pages was made by Alex Liubenko. A technical assistance was rendered by Alexandr Shved. The visual and text information was put in the world web by Sveta Kokorina. The photographs were kindly given by Viktor Koshmal and Valeriy Inyutin. In the work on the texts of the articles I was helped by Liubov Potapenko, Bill Fordyce and Liudmila Studyonova.

It is quite natural that the first version of the web site turned out far from being excellent, but the author's yearning for filling the proper information gap dominated over his fear to become a subject of a sharp criticism. Especially tempting was the idea to gather for the first time in one place various information about the city, which is not any way biased or subjected to a censorship.

In the near future such new sections of the site should appear:
-  legends,
-  museums,
-  fine arts,
-  arts and crafts.

I think that of a special interest of my visitors will be a section "The Chernihiv Calendar", a kind of a poster of all main events of the city's life. I hope that not of less interest will be a section "Travel Tips", which will be intended for those, who want to visit the Princely City. But if you are about to make a sight-seeng tour within the next few days, you may rely upon my assistance. E-mail me in advance: esta950@gmail.com.
